Purpose: This study examined the effects of a Korean Traditional Play Program (KTPP) on the emotions, interpersonal relations, and self-esteem of persons with schizophrenia.
Methods: The study adopted a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest. Subjects were schizophrenics who were at a psychiatric institute in H-Gun J-Do, Korea. They were divided into the control group (20) and experimental group (23). The program was conducted twice a week for 14 times. Data was collected using an Emotional Expressivity Scale (EES), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Relationship Change Scale (RCS), and Self-Esteem Scale (SES).
Results: The scores of emotional expression, interpersonal relation, and self-esteem increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: The result of this study shows that a KTPP had a positive impact on persons with schizophrenia. Therefore, it is suggested that the program could be used as an effective nursing intervention for Korean persons with schizophrenia.
